Something I find fascinating about sports in general is how each team has its own microcosm of the league-wide talking points. Who's the best ever? Who represented the league in this decade? These same questions and many more have their own discussions played out in barbershops across America. But if you zoom in locally to each franchise, the conversation is just as interesting and involved, and there are 30 of them for each question. Debating Kemp vs. T-Mac is fun, but it's even more fun when you realize you can do the same for Garnett vs Holiday, Hardpeck vs. Paul, Wiggins vs. Bosh. It's also fun to watch current players for a team and wonder how they project when compared to the greatest players of that franchise.
So what I've done is take each franchise and figure out who is their all-time leading scorer. Then I analyzed the roster to see who their current active leading scorer is, and predict whether that player can catch the all-time leading scorer. Also keep in mind for one hilarious example of this, I collected this information before the season started. The point totals are also of the season start.
Philadelphia 76ers
All Time Leading Scorer: Gordon Hayward (9885 points)
Active Leading Scorer: Van Grimaldi (7123)
Will Grimaldi Catch Hayward?: Absolutely.
Notes: In fact, Ben Simmons will too, and will most likely end up with more than Grimaldi when all is said and done. Simmons has 6767 points in two less seasons than Van.
Charlotte Bobcats
All Time Leading Scorer: John Wall (4615)
Active Leading Scorer: Klay Thompson (4452)
Will Thompson catch Wall: Uhhhh duh (he already passed him this season, in fact)
Notes: This will make Thompson the leading scorer of two franchises, which is impressive. Of course, the Bobcats haven't been around forever, which is why the rest of their top ten is so interesting: Lavar Ball, Phil Milburn, Lonzo Ball, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Wright, Danny Granger, C.J. Miles, and Enes Kanter.
Milwaukee Bucks
All Time Leading Scorer: Ron Artest (13937)
Active Leading Scorer: Damion McNary (5372)
Will McNary Catch Artest:
Notes: The new current leader is Ricky Rubio, who also will not catch Artest. Maybe another young player can, but they'd have to be Bucks lifers to qualify, and...well, you know.
Chicago Bulls
All Time Leading Scorer: Kobe Bryant (15252)
Active Leading Scorer: Danilo Gallinari (11747)
Will Gallinari Catch Kobe?: Not a chance
Notes: Desantis has an outside shot with just over 4000 points, but he'd have to up his scoring considerably.
Cleveland Cavaliers
All Time Leading Scorer: Chris Paul (17781)
Active Leading Scorer: Dirk Hardpeck (8960)
Will Hardpeck Catch CP3?: Maybe, but probably not
Notes: Hardpeck could catch him if he sticks around, but it's hard to see that happening.
Boston Celtics
All Time Leading Scorer: Alonzo Mourning (18082)
Active Leading Scorer: Tyler Ulis (5732)
Will Ulis Catch Zo?: Nope
Notes: Ulis is a great scorer but it's hard to see him being the kind of presence in the franchise that Mourning was. The more talent the Celtics put around Ulis, the less likely he goes nova for his entire career.
Los Angeles Clippers
All Time Leading Scorer: Kevin Durant (36165)(!!!!!)
Active Leading Scorer: Kemba Walker (3864)
Will Kemba catch KD?:
Notes: KD is the all time leading scorer. No one will catch him in LA. No one might catch him period.
Vancouver/VanMemphis Grizzlies
All Time Leading Scorer: Vince Carter (12522)
Active Leading Scorer: Delmer Lillard (1193)
Will Whoever That Guy Is Catch Vince?: Nope
Notes: The bar isn't too high, though. If Josh Jackson becomes a star, that record could be his.
Atlanta Hawks
All Time Leading Scorer: Antonio McDyess (20993)
Active Leading Scorer: Daniel Randle (9656)
Will Randle Pass McDyess?: Maybe
Notes: If Randle averages around 20ppg for the next 4 seasons of his prime, he'll be close, but he'd need to be given the McDyess treatment of staying on even past his prime usefulness.
Miami Heat
All Time Leading Scorer: LeBron James (24906)
Active Leading Scorer: Alvin Pack (1713)
Will Pack Catch LeBron:
Notes: It's funny because we think of LeBron in PBSL as a disappointment compared to his real life counterpart, but he set a franchise record with the Heat that probably will stay for a while.
Utah Jazz
All Time Leading Scorer: Tim Duncan (24004)
Active Leading Scorer: Joseph Kight (7006)
Will Kight Catch Duncan: No
Notes: Any other team and maybe, but Duncan put forth a lasting legacy that is unlikely to topple. Juicy James is more intriguing but we'll see if he has the longevity to stick around.
Sacramento Kings
All Time Leading Scorer: Tracy McGrady (24506)
Active Leading ScorerJeffrey Duren (5387)
Will Duren Catch T-Max?: No
Notes: Doesn't 24,000 points seem like the sweet spot in unattainable franchise scoring record? Duren is amazing but McGrady is the best King of all time, in some circles the best player of a all time, and he'll be holding this record for a long time.
New York Knicks
All Time Leading Scorer: David Robinson (16933)
Active Leading Scorer: Nikola Jokic (8052)
Will Jokic Catch Robinson: Unlikely
Notes: He theoretically can. He needs to average 2000 points a season over the next 4-5 years. The problem is he hasn't scored more than 1817 in a season. But if he beasts in this max deal and isn't traded, he can take the record by the time his color starts to fade.
Los Angeles Lakers
All Time Leading Scorer: Kevin Johnson (13331)
Active Leading Scorer: Gustave Lecroix (7738)
Will Lecroix Catch Johnson?: Yes
Notes: This is mostly on Tray. If he can get this team talented enough to not need to trade Lecroix, he can take this easily in the next three seasons.
Orlando Magic
All Time Leading Scorer: Mike Miller (9787) (This is sad)
Active Leading Scorer: DeSean Hawkins (1291)
Will Hawkins Catch Miller?: Nah
Notes: Hawkins could certainly do it if Andy weren't the new Doug. If Hawkins actually stays in Orlando it's a lock.
Dallas Mavericks
All Time Leading Scorer: Antawn Jamison (16633)
Active Leading Scorer: Bradley Beal (10762)
Will Beal Catch Jamison?: I think so
Notes: Beal is 28, so he only has a few more years of productivity. He needs to average ~2000 points a season over the next three seasons (assuming the Mavs decline his option for that ridiculous 4th year). He should be good enough to get there.
Brooklyn/New Jersey Nets
All Time Leading Scorer: Chris Kaman (15340)
Active Leading Scorer: Buddy Pedraza (11332)
Will Buddy Catch Kaman?: Yes
Notes: Buddy is going to be in that 18-20k points range and will be the best Net of all time.
Denver Nuggets
All Time Leading Scorer: Klay Thompson (13346)
Active Leading Scorer: Jrue Holiday (8032)
Will Jrue Catch Klay?: Nope
Notes: Jrue won't get much higher up this list with his decline looming. No one else on the current roster looks to be much of a threat.
Indiana Pacers
All Time Leading Scorer: Deron Williams (25033)
Active Leading Scorer: Tobias Harris (4832)
Will Harris Catch D-Will: NOPE
Notes: That one is going to stand forever.
New Orleans Pelicans/Charlotte Hornets
All Time Leading Scorer: Damian Lillard (13736)
Active Leading Scorer: Buddy Hield (2688)
Will Hield Catch Dame?: No
Notes: Hield's going to have to average more than 18 a game to touch Dame.
Detroit Pistons
All Time Leading Scorer: Davis (24750)
Active Leading Scorer: Davis
Where Will Davis End Up?: 40000
Notes: Maybe even higher. All time leading scorer for sure.
Toronto Raptors
All Time Leading Scorer: Michael Finley (14411)
Active Leading Scorer: Refugio Lozano (5682)
Will Lozano catch Finley?: No
Notes: A reduced role and more talent around him will prevent Lozano from ever reaching this goal, but Joffrey might have a better chance as his skills continue to progress. He is currently in the mid 3000s.
Houston Rockets
All Time Leading Scorer: Al Horford (17685)
Active Leading Scorer: Horford
Where Will Horford End Up?: 19300
Notes: SERIOUSLY, WHY IS HE STILL THIS GOOD? Maybe he'll end up with more if 78 keeps him in a Rockets uni after this season.
San Antonio Spurs
All Time Leading Scorer: Josh Smith (22997)
Active Leading Scorer: Paul Lugo (1371)
Will Lugo Catch J-Smoove?:
Notes:
Phoenix Suns
All Time Leading Scorer: Kevin Love (31426)
Active Leading Scorer: Love
Where Will Love End Up: 33500
Notes: He can't stay another year, can he?
Oklahoma City Thunder/Seattle Supersonics
All Time Leading Scorer: Isaiah Thomas (12009)
Active Leading Scorer: Jabari Parker (9332)
Will Jabari Catch IT?: He should, but...
Notes: He won't make it this year so he'd need to be signed to another contract to do so. It's hard to tell if MIR will bring him back next year. Maybe he gets traded this year.
Minnesota Timberwolves
All Time Leading Scorer: Chris Bosh (25924)
Active Leading Scorer: Andrew Wiggins (12099)
Will Wiggins Catch Bosh?: No
Notes: CUZ WIGGINS IS ON THE BLOCK HIT ME UP FAM
Portland Trailblazers
All Time Leading Scorer: Derrick Rose (20609)
Active Leading Scorer: Rose
Where Will Rose End Up?: 23200
Notes: He probably won't be in Portland past his contract.
Golden State Warriors
All Time Leading Scorer: Shawn Kemp
Active Leading Scorer: Jayson Tatum
Will Tatum catch Kemp:
Notes: I'm so glad Ben is back tho
Washington Wizards
All Time Leading Scorer: Rashard Lewis (16696)
Active Leading Scorer: Bonifaz Wenninger (1711)
Will Bonifaz Catch Rashard?:
Notes: D'Angelo is gonna try to take the throne starting this year.
