1990 NBA Draft Lottery - SLOE of Duty: Capture the Flag

This is the 1990 NBA Draft Lottery, re-imagined as a high-stakes, sweat-inducing match of SLOE of Duty: Capture the Flag on a classic map.

The objective? Secure the #1 Overall Intel Package (Gary Payton).

But before start let's take a look at a few of the prospects

Image

Gary Payton (PG | Oregon State) - The consensus top talent in the draft, " The Glove" is already one of the most tenacious, trash-talking perimeter defenders college basketball has ever seen. Offensively, he is a brilliant playmaker and a fierce competitor who can score in the paint or find the open man. He is the definitive franchise point guard of this class

Image

Derrick Coleman (PF | Syracuse) - Coleman is a walking double-double with elite athleticism, a smooth face-up game, and the ability to handle the rock like a guard. He draws comparisons to Karl Malone but with a better perimeter stroke. If he stays motivated, he is a perennial All-Star.

Image

Dennis Scott (SF | Georgia Tech) - "3D" is a lethal sniper from deep. With the college three-point line becoming a massive weapon, Scott is the prototypical modern wing who can stretch the floor. He has great size at 6'8" and a beautifully quick release.

Image

Kendall Gill (SG | Illinois) - A hyper-athletic guard from the "Flyin' Illini" squad. Gill is an exceptional slasher, a strong finisher above the rim, and a lockdown on-ball defender. His mid-range game is solid, and his physical tools make him an instant impact player on both ends.

Image

Cedric Ceballos (SF | Cal State Fullerton) - An incredibly unique scorer who masterfully finds spaces in the defense. Ceballos isn't a traditional knockdown shooter, but his off-ball cutting, offensive rebounding, and knack for spectacular finishes make him a great addition to a team that can use his skillset.

Image

Elden Campbell (PF/C | Clemson) - A long, mobile big man with excellent shot-blocking instincts. Campbell is incredibly fluid running the floor for a guy his size and offers great defensive upside. If he refines his post-up game, he’ll be an excellent anchor for a fast-paced team.

The 12 non-playoff teams have loaded into the lobby. Here is the play-by-play of how the order shook out, from the bottom of the scoreboard to the final game-winning capture.

The lobby held standard positioning, but as the countdown ticked away, nobody managed to pull off a spawn-flip. Will every single team ended up finishing exactly where their pre-match seed predicted or will there be a surprise? Let's begin the game.

Phase 1: The Defeated Defenders (Seeds 12 down to 7)

The lower-seeded squads spawned in with low expectations, immediately getting trapped in their own spawn boxes.

7. Indiana Pacers: Methodical, slow-rolling strategy. They managed to cross the map's center line, but a well-placed UAV exposed their position, and they were neutralized just short of the objective. Locked in at #7.

Phase 2: The Red-Zone Heartbreaks (Seeds 6 down to 4)
We are deep in enemy territory now. The top tier of the draft board is in sight, but the defense is suffocating.

6. Atlanta Hawks: Sneaky play. They used the Ninja perk to slide right past the outer perimeter. They actually grabbed the flag off the stand! But as they turned to sprint home, they got wall-banged through a shipping container. Shut down. Locked in at #6.

5. Utah Jazz: A heavy-armor build. They used a riot shield to march right into the flag room, absorbing immense damage. They made it halfway back across the map, but a relentless crossfire broke their shield. Dropped at the midfield marker. Locked in at #5.

4. Washington Bullets: This was their main squad's push. A beautifully coordinated tactical assault. They cleared out the defenders, grabbed the flag, and were practically breathing on their own capture point. At the literal last millisecond, an enemy tactical knife shutdown stopped them dead. So close to a podium finish. Locked in at #4.

3. Philadelphia 76ers (Bronze Medal)
The 76ers went full "try-hard" mode. They called in a Counter-UAV, completely blurring the map's radar. They sprinted into the enemy base, grabbed the flag, and initiated a mad dash back home. They were sliding, jumping, and dropshotting through a hail of bullets. They managed to survive long enough to secure a top-3 lock, but just before making the final capture, they ran out of stamina and were picked off by a long-range burst.

Result: Flag dropped. Locked into the #3 Pick.

2. New York Knicks (Silver Medal)
The Knicks played like absolute veterans. They let the 76ers do the dirty work, waited for the map to clear, and then swept into the enemy base. They grabbed the flag and had a completely open lane back to their base. It looked like an uncontested game-winner. They were screaming into their headsets, celebrating early. But right as they approached the capture point, they realized an enemy player was hiding in a dark corner, blocking the capture. They got turned on in a brutal 1v1 gunfight.

Result: Outplayed at the goal line. Locked into the #2 Pick.

1. Golden State Warriors (The Game-Winner)
The Warriors played perfectly. They held the high ground the entire match, mapping people with an AR. While the Knicks and 76ers were choking at the goal line, the Warriors' top player pulled off a flawless map flank. They scooped up the dropped flag, popped a Dead Silence and a Stim Shot, and cruised across the finish line entirely untouched.
