Discount old farts’ trainings

Post by greepleairport »

I realized tha we discount training over 31 yr old’s POTENTIAL training, but seriously, why in gods name would I train someone’s potential while their currents are spiraling downward??

I think this discount is useless. If we want training discounts on grandpas, it should be for current and athletic trainings, not potential.

…has anyone seriously ever trained a 31+’s potential??? Were they mental???

As far as I can tell, Training Camp works thus:

1. If player's Current rating is less than their Potential rating in a category, randomly improve Current (up to 10 points).
2. Check to see if player's Potential ratings drop (almost certainly "yes" for over-31s)
3. If player's new Potential rating is lower than player's new Current rating, drop the Current rating to match the Potential.

Given this behavior, consider a 31-year-old who has a rating of, say, 65 in defensive rebounding - this likely means their current and potential ratings match.

If I train their potential up (B to A) to 85 points during the All-Star training, what happens next season during TC?

1. The player's current rating should increase by up to 10 points (65 is less than 85).
2. The player's potential rating will drop (but probably by no more than 10 points).
3. The player's current rating will be between 65 and 75, while their potential rating will be between 75 and 85.

The following TC, it's still possible the player's current rating may improve; it's more likely the player's potential - and therefore current - rating will decline again, but still be over 65 (where it was two years before).

Meaning training a veteran player's potential staves off decay in that rating for at least two seasons, possibly more.

The player's other ratings WILL continue to decline, however, but I could see this being useful for a team that relies on a single player with a high score to do certain tasks like rebounding, blocking shots, assists, etc.

That’s fine and good, but occasionally ratings do drop by more than 10 (see TC deaths of any age, it happens, happened to me many times) in which case the points you spent were a waste, on top of any points spent to boost ther current rating after boosting their potential.

With the example of 65 => 85, over 31 you spend 25 points to do that. You’ll spend an additional 21 points to take him from 65 => 75 (46 total). Even if you don’t spend that amount to train current, it’s a long term investment of 25 pts for a short term gain, that could maybe net 10 current rating in a season without paying extra, maybe another 5 after that if they don’t completely die in that category (while other categories certainly start to die).

My trolling tone aside, it makes so much less sense to train an old guys potential than a young guy. So much less sense that actually doing it feels like a waste of hard earned points….save your scenario where the overall quality of player declines anyway, and if an old C gets a DRB boost but loses 10 STR, I’d still argue their ability to rebound will decline despite the category boost.

If it's an argument you're looking for you won't find it here. The question was "why would someone train a 31+ year old potential" and I was looking for a possible explanation. I wouldn't do it.
