1980 Celtics Critical Conference of Pressings

Post by AngryBanana »

The reporters were called outside of Boston Garden at 1:16 in the morning. Everyone in their pajamas dully roaring at the idea of having to meet at such an absurd time. People like Generic Wolves Reporter in his Dukes of Hazard shirt looking on with a hazy look because he thought he was late leans over and whispers to Steve Duin

"GWR: Hey... do you know where Sham Smith is? He owes me $200 bucks because he said it would be a cold day in hell before we ever had another creation draft.

Duin: No, I haven't seen him. Also, you bet $200 about something as dumb as the creation draft? That is bold.

GWR: No, we bet $100 on that, I won another $100 at the last min because BlackSuperman quit the league in embarrassment after losing in the finals. I liked my odds after he didn't want to take it one game at a time like the Angrybana here wanted to do it.

Duin: Yeah, that was wild huh? I still can not believe Angrybana pulled that off. No one expected him to win a game let alone the series.

at this point Chet Youbetcha leans in wearing a Three's Company onesie and says,

Chet: What the hell are y'all talking about???

At this moment loud thunderous noise is made and all of the sudden a Tesla Model X appears from a flash of lighting. It is at this moment that everyone spills their Tang that was provided as refreshments in astonishment. The back door opens and Angrybana gets out of the car. He is wearing a green suit that is made out of what appears to be 3D printed material. His tie is a holographic representation of a tie instead of an actual tie. His hat is a silver sliver that covers his full head like any other hat, but when he takes it off it shrinks to become a pocket square that he puts in his front pocket. He then pulls one of the sleeves of the jacket where the pattern completely changes from pinstripes to a solid green color. AB approaches the microphone without walking because his shoes levitate. When he arrives at the podium he looks around takes a deep sigh and then begins his speech.

Hello everyone. Welcome to a new time. A PBSL... a NEW DAY. I know like some of the rest of you that were from the previous run of PBSL, I was really running out of steam towards the end there. I was in a space where I was no longer enjoying the game for various reasons. I was competing yet still felt like the fun wasn't there anymore. Anyways, now that we are in the 1980s again, I have already seen a shift in momentum. Not only for myself, but for the whole damn place. Anyways, I would sit here and talk about the excitement of what is to come, but damnit I want to take another moment to relish in the winnings of last season. So even though I know Doug spoiled this for those of you that check the forum regularly, here is the last banner of a forgone era. The last banner of the last crusade. The last banner of SLOE and PBSL how we knew it before...

Isn't she a beauty. Anyways, I last season was truly a grind. I traded for Stan Van Gundy and Jon Isaac during the season and was pretty content with the team. I had come to terms with Lew Alcindor never being THE GUY like Kareem will be for me this year, but I built enough players around him to support him being a top end shooter. I then got lucky with X looping back around on a deal for Amen that we had talked about which really put my team over the top. Anyways, I never expected to get to the finals, as I thought either the Warriors or Bulls would have beaten me, alas I played both... and I beat both. Than it was time... the finals... IDK I am not going to dive into that time anymore. I won, I am glad to have won and it was a fun time in the chat with Doug's banter of Good Charlotte playing the National Anthem.

This offseason saw me take on a new approach to this whole thing. I helped David and Doug out with the creation draft because I knew how hard it would be for two people. It was hard for the three of us, so glad I could be there for them for that.

I got a back end pick, third to last. So my plan was initially was to get two bigs. The one I was eyeing to build around was gone by my pick so I pivoted. I grabbed Mo Cheeks, because we can always use Mo Cheeks amirite? Than I was like y'know what. I had Lew in the last iteration, let's get him in this one. Also, he is a Laker great, so lets put him on the CELTICS! I kinda leaned into the win now approach after that trying to secure scorers at all levels.

That then lead to an interesting preseason result. I was actually a defensive juggxrnaught... I am not sure how that will work out as the year goes on and real gameplays are put in. I really like my team for the next year or so. But I will eventually lean into a new build around Mo I think. This season though lets try to get my boy Kareem a MVP! I think he has a chance to be honest. I know other players are having great years, but I have one of the best facilitators on his team AND a good third player in Elvin Hayes. Lets go everyone!

Steve Duin, the Oregonian: What was it about Maurice Cheeks that convinced you to stake the future of your franchise on his shoulders? Kareem and Elvin Hayes carried you in the preseason but their combined age is 67 years old... do you feel they will be able to hold up over the course of the regular season? It sure looks like you're equipped to win now, but what is your long-term plan for the Celtics?

Thanks for the question Steve. Can you and GWR to please stop going back to the tang desk, you’ve had enough!

The honest answer would be that I chose Cheeks because it was a coin flip of sorts. As I previously mentioned, my top prospect was gone. And my original goal was to get two young bigs to build around. So I got to looking and didnt like any of the remaining young bigs at my point in the draft, so I looked at PG. I saw Mo and was like “hey I like his name. Hey, I know that player. Hey, he is pretty good.” I looked past some of what I thought were disadvantages, such as his height, weight, and INS ability. He was too good of a facilitator to not get at this point in the draft I thought. So while I may never prop the full weight of the team on his shoulders, whoever is that guy for my team (Kareem right now) will have someone there that can for sure help assist in carrying the load.

2061 SVG: I followed you through the portal to 1980 to celebrate our championship. I hope you have time in your schedule to hang with me before I head back to 2061. Since I am here I'll ask a question, what are your goals for your team this season? Are you going for back to back titles and if so can I help? I can change my name to Brian Winters and send the real Brian to 2061 for the time being.

My goals are to win the division as I think I have a really good chance at that given my teams ability. I really do think I could get all 1st team from Kareem and an all team nod from Mo this year. I would like back to back titles, but it will for sure be interesting to see how this year pans out given the equality across this whole league at the current moment.

Justin Bieber, Teremana.com: How would you rate your creation draft and why? Who had a better draft class, K100 or jlmarines?

What do you say to the Celtics fans who are boycotting the team over the drafting of former Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? There was one man quoted as saying that it was a disgrace to see him in Celtic green

Bruce Wayne, The Gotham Gazetteer

The East looks formidable this year. Early defensive numbers are impressive and have your expectations high I would assume. Offensive numbers left some to be desired.

Simple question really, do you think you will be able to keep up with the Knicks and take the division?

That’s a question three seasons from now. I previously mentioned. He may never be THE GUY here, and that’s fine. But I will need A GUY here if that if the case. I gave them right now with Kareem and Elvin, so I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Nah, riding this dream wave while I have it.

Idk. As I said, my plan fell apart so I worked with it in the fly, but I’d say a solid 7/10 given how well we played in preseason.

1. Me
2. Superdog auto draft
3. K100
4,000 miles of crap
4. JLM

Ill fill them in on a little known secret is that the Celtics were going to draft a younger big with our second round pick, but Kareem actually called us - said he was terrified of going back to LaLa Land and relished the opportunity to make things right by getting a championship for the Boston fan base.

Yeah. The Knicks look good on paper/in the forum. We’re good on the court where it matters

You mean Eazy? Idk. I’m confused why Xist thinks there is a rivalry too, but I’m fine to embrace it if I must.
