S71 Town Hall #4: Day 60 Review

Post by MexicanMamba »

It feels to me that there was a lot more activity at Day 60 than we have typically had recently, both with moves big and small. So, let's talk about it. What caught your eye? Who made out well? Who has left you scratching your head? Did any of these moves majorly shake up any of the division, conference, playoff, or league races? Or discuss any other aspect of the D60 fallout that you'd care to.

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers, which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Note: Use approximately 5 sentences as your bare minimum for 1 point. If you write 3 long, complex sentences, you'll still get a point. If you write 5 3 word sentences, you will not get a point. Don't @ me.

Due: Sim 4 deadline.

Talk about a juicy day 60. Filled with trades, fights, bolstering up and throwing in the towel.

Fight! We'll start with the fight! In huge blow up fashion. We saw the....spurs and Mavs get into a little heated tax argument. It was good haha. Mavs have been calling out the spurs since last season and well it happened again haha. The spurs seemingly for the first time, decided to send a shot back and we may have gotten our meme of the year from it. 🍿 worthy back and forth.

Powering up - the heat and Mavs have been working on trades all week. Just waiting for the day 60 buzzer to ring so they could both capitalize on a weaker wide open conference push. Omega has the warriors out in front but it's not the type of dominance that the pistons have over it's conference. The raptors were slow to get out the gate but just ran off 7 straight. The time to strike was now and that's what the heat and Mavs did. Mavs USED the hawks to gangbang the magic into securing two big men. This will allow the Mavs to get into a more traditional lineup with DJ moving back to the 3. There's a sense of depth lacking with the Mavs so they will need to remain healthy. I do love the timing of the moves. Its early enough where they should build some cohesion and still push for 50 wins in the weakest division in the league.
The Heat like the Mavs, are doing moves at the perfect time to try and streak. The heat are battling against the warriors who were my odds on favorite to represent Omega in the finals. I'm not so sure I like the warriors above the heat now. The heat managed to bring in rebounding god Kuminga. The always reliable defending Wemby, AND they brought in versatility himself Tony Newland. I think the heat are my new favorite team to represent this conference now. I mentioned 3 studs the heat brought in while not even mentioning the situation they're coming into. Johnny Davis is currently averaging 25-6-7. I still think the heats best lineup is with JD at the 1. The Heat received some very friendly but quad benefiting moves from the Grizz, Suns and Lakers. Grizz seemed to do the heat a favor in taking points for a salary necessary dump. The Lakers traded Newland for 2 prospects but really 1 main prospect. And the Suns gave up Wemby for free to the grizz who forwarded it to the heat for free. I absolutely love this type of friendly deals that aren't league breaking, but also that helps a team make a push. If I'm the warriors I'm a little annoyed at the circle jerk, but at least there's still time to figure some things out.

Throw in the damn towel I mentioned Lakers and suns in the previous topic about trading players away. 2 very different situations. The Lakers made trades minutes before the pistons traded for ware in the off-season. They admitted at that time, they wish they hadn't. The offload of Newland was a way for them to start the teardown to get under the apron. The suns sold off Ingram and samples to the cats who can relist them both and maybe get more points from that deal by trade deadline. Ingram is the kind of depth the pistons had been begging for before the suns tanked. Wemby also left Phoenix in what secured the suns sell off and the move to get under the apron. Now it's just a matter of them resetting their tax while keeping the big 3 together. The team is still solid and those collection of wings will go off here to end the season as the only main 3 options. It should be a ticket selling finish down in the desert.

You know what? Now that you mention it, I am a little annoyed. Very annoyed.

For me, all the action worth discussing went down in those 2 trades to make my title for conference champ that much more complicated to attain. We're all playing for 2nd place here, right? Perhaps that's the real excitement of the season? So, mentees, @Mike Lowry and @LazyTitanSmash ? I see you. I Fryeing see you.

Aside from that, it was a bit devastating watching some teams drop out of the race completely. I thought the Suns built a PHENOMENAL team this year, one that actually held a candle to the Pistons. It would have been nice to see them ride it out even if it did end in defeat.

Better luck next year I suppose...

Day 60 shifted the Omega Conference.

Pre-60 trade deadline: The Warriors looked head and shoulders above the rest of Omega. The Raptors and Cavs both look solid but don’t have top-tier point guards. Not sure what’s going on with the Spurs; they have a good team but just don’t have the wins to go with it. Also, never underestimate the Bulls, even in a tax reset year. But, basically, the Omega Conference looks much weaker than the Alpha Conference.

Mavs Day 60 trade deadline moves - With the moves to pick up a starting PF and starting center, the Mavs are no longer a run-and-gun team but a balanced defensive and offensive team. It’s going to cost us 83 points to stay out of tax jail. (FVCK!)

The Heat had similar ideas. I really, really like Newland but I think they overpaid a bit for him (Daeqwon Plowden should have been enough for Newland). But I loved their other pickups. Kaminga is a baller, and they got him for a good deal—same with Wemby. I really, really like the pickups. Can’t wait to see how Omega shakes out.

All the day 60 trades so far have really been covered. Suns and Lakers sold. Mavs and Heat stocked up. Disappointed in the selling, but I understand it. I like what the Heat did and am not surprised that the Mavs and Hawks trade since I called that immediately after UFA round 1. It's too bad for the Hawks as I thought Sanchez and Campbell would be good bookends on a team that just needed to fill in wings, which are probably the most abundant player to get. I wish the Hawks had a plan because it just seems like they were a loophole around the Mavs not having the cap space to get the FAs they wanted in the first place.

As for other teams not in the main 4, I guess the Nets and Magic did a salary trade deal beyond the other day 60 trades. Good move by Ed to get out of the tax. Bobcats get a cool 10 to take on two contracts that they could feasibly move at deadline if Varga was more active on the trade market, but I think there's a greater chance that Ingram becomes cut salary next year rather than a trade piece. (I am sad to see the Suns tear down in such a hurry because at the very least, they might have been able to eke out more wins until trade deadline and do the same deal with the Bobcats or even find someone who would've paid for Ingram or Samples--or at least taken them on at the cost of cuttable vets).

What happened to the Suns/Heat/Lakers trade though? I thought that was on the board and can no longer find it. There was another team involved (I think) that I was gonna talk about? Oh well.

I'm surprised the Omega teams made moves but I'm glad to see it too because extra competition always brings out the best from everyone. I liked both of the moves from the Mavericks and Heat as they really solidified their frontcourts to compete with the Warriors, Cavaliers, and Raptors so it will be interesting to see how their new gameplans adjust to the changes. I was not the biggest fan of what Memphis and Orlando received for their parts in the trade because I think they could have held out for more compensation but if they liked the assets they received then so be it. I think the Omega Conference is going to be a fun race now and wish all the teams in the running the best of luck.

The only aspect of D60 I care to talk about is the fact that both trades I was working on either fell through, or the person just ignores my PMs. The first part is just a tragedy, and I do not blame the GM in the slightest for backing out of the deal we made. Cottrill getting hurt was truly a sad moment, that if you have been following my season, is just another cherry on top. So, that sucks because I had been eyeing and trying, unsuccessfully, to trade for the player for the past three seasons. The other part is just frustrating because I have sent more than one PM to this GM and they have not even opened the messages. I get it if the person has not been active, but they are putting in their rosters and what not. So... make it make sense.

Nuggets making moves on the daily! Not that anyone cares besides me, but I got rid Markham shipped off to a team that will use him and got a 1 year contract in return, so more money off my books next year. AND most importantly, just made a last minute trade with the Celtics to get my sweet angel baby boy William Lindsey back because if I'm going down this year, I want him to be there with me.

I really liked the Mavs/Magic/Hawks trade. Mavs and hawks both seemed to upgrade their C position and the magic were able to get rid of contracts and gain points and a pick to help their rebuild. Puts the magic one step forward to being able to build back up to a playoff contender and also helps solidify a key positions for the Mavs/Hawks. Sucks that the hawks got the upgrade since they’re in my division but I can still appreciate the move. Good job to all GMs

Had some chaos in the FACEBOOK chat on Saturday morning/afternoon that was exciting. But I'm sad to see the Suns fold like wet towel and throw themselves in as a forfeit. So disappointed, but I guess the team is more of an Icarus than a Sun. The Heat are making moves to compete, and I'm loving it! Excited to see the type of run he makes this season. I applaud him for it! Are the Mavs-Hawks the new Celtics-Grizz-Kings-Cavs? Seems that way... #feederteam

I did not realize that the Suns and I were both selling off at the same time until the trade was posted. The Heat hit me up about Newland and it didn't take much negotiating. Then I saw I was roped into a group freaky kinda thing once it was official. Good to see a team that has been out of the full game for quite some time due to tax issues, dive back in head first. My own decision to change my mind on competing was not specifically due to the inevitability of the Pistons, but due to the fact that at 11-9 and fresh off a 5 game losing streak, not all to great teams, I wasn't even in position to make a dent and that made me lose a lot of interest in holding tight. Was much happier to help another franchise, who hasn't had a ton of success yet, get into a better position to make noise over just sticking to my guns. I do think the Suns may have shut it down a bit too early, but, hell, I don't really blame them for shifting either.

I think my trade was a mistake from a pure strategy point of view but I just dont have that competitive push in me right now to try and win so I'm happy he found a home in Miami with a GM that is trying to win. I thought the Mavericks did a great job too building their frontcourt and now fielding a complete team. I'm surprised the Raptors and Cavaliers are sitting tight right now because they have contracts that are moveable, but they right now are holding steady. I am disappointed the Suns and Lakers threw in the towel, but huge tax bills are no joke so I understand why they were skittish. Overall, I am happy to see teams try and compete and look forward to seeing them make a push for the playoffs.
