There seem to be a lot of random articles about so I was looking for something to put my creative juices toward and decided I will give doing an injury recap a try. I’ll hit the major ones and maybe a couple minors if I can make up a good story. Probably hard to do this every Sim but once every couple when we get new entries should probably be good enough.
Mac McClung:
This was one of the scariest injuries this league has seen in a long time. McClung was in possession of the ball as the clock counted down to the end of Q1. He let it rip right at the buzzer and was for some reason hotly contested by the Magics Robert Hannon. Hannon came in with a strong arm and McClung was thrown backwards, seemed to half flip, and landed straight onto the back of his head. You could hear a pin drop inside the Kia Center. Noone made a noise for what seemed like ages as McClung lay motionless on the court. It took more than 5 minutes for him to regain consciousness and was eventually stretchered out and taken to the local Orlando hospital. It was reported as a Grade 3 concussion and he would be out multiple weeks. This is being taken very seriously by the League as head injuries as bad as this can often lead to permanent brain damage. We hope his recovery goes well and he’s back on the court and back to his usual self. You could feel the change in the game after this happened, players on both teams didn’t seem to be as up for the game as they had been, ending in a low scoring affair, with the Bulls pulling it out in a 96-94 victory.
Brittney Griner:
The game had barely begun, Celtics won the tip off went down the court did a nice inside pass to Brittney, who missed the first attempt but got the rebound and put it back up for the first basket of the game but doing so at the cost of her own body. Pacers Brian Sechrist was right there with her trying to get the rebound and ultimately all 287 lbs of him landed right on top of her foot. She came off the court in obvious pain, but we weren’t sure of the extent of her injury until she came out after Halftime in street clothes, a walking boot, and crutches. It was reported that she had fractured her foot and would be out around 2 months. Some people might take this opportunity to bring up the obvious physical differences of allowing men and women to play in the same league, but she was off to her best start, averaging 15 PPG in just under 30 min. The Celtics stood up for their teammate though, scoring one of their highest point totals of the season and beating down the Pacers with ease.
Cedric Boehm:
Another Q1 injury in the books. This time it was the Magic’s Cedric Boehm who was only on for 7 minutes before a non-contact injury occurred on the court. The Magic were running a play and Boehm just pulled up and went down off the ball. Not much to analyze on this one, it’s always scary to see a non-contact injury as the first thought is always that an ACL is torn and they are out for the season. Follow up from the Magic indicated it was a minor tear and would only be out around 2 months, which is good news to hear. Especially for the Bucks who as it turned out, traded for Boehm in the following days. One is to assume they either had the deal done and worked out already, or they were in constant talks with the Magic to monitor the situation before pulling the trigger on this deal.
Harold Schiff/ Darrell Grupton/ Lenz Durrenberger:
We had an epidemic of dislocated shoulders hit the league the past couple of weeks. Make sure you bubble wrap your players accordingly. All at different positions but pretty much occurring in the same form or fashion. Player drives into the basket is hit hard by the defense and thrown into the goalpost underneath right into their shooting shoulder. It’s not a very long injury, but it hurts like a bitch and can take a little bit of time to come back as the possibility of reinjury is great. These players just need to focus on their PT routines and they will be back in due time.
AJ Blaze:
This injury isn’t too bad on its own but wanted to bring it up due to the craziness of the situation. Blaze will only be out a week or so, but his pride will be hurt forever. Not necessarily known for being a dirty player, but everyone gets caught up in the moment from time to time. Early in the second quarter blaze was squaring off against the much bigger Dominitrix Johnson, and much to his name, showed Domination. With a big swing of the arms, Dominitrix’s elbow caught Blaze right on the jaw. A brawl ensued between the two teams, as the Trailblazers thought this was done with ill intentions. After review, the refs did not see anything that seemed to be purposeful action toward Blaze, and Dominitrix did not receive any punishment for the action. Mavericks must have been heated up after this brawl as they were able to come back from a first quarter deficit and control the entire game. Blaze will unfortunately have to wear a mask the rest of the year, which is always a heckling opportunity for any opposing fans.
That will wrap up the first edition of the Injury recap. We are entering the meat of the schedule for the entire league, so we expect a few more big injuries to occur before the season ends. I’ll plan to check back in at the end of March as we get ready to push into the last month of regular season and into playoffs. Stay healthy friends.
