S68 Town Hall #1: Reverse, reverse

Post by greepleairport »

Rules: 1 point if you give thoughtful answers which I will award after the timer ends for responses. The timer ends for responses at the moment the corresponding week's Sim is run.

Due: Sim 1 deadline.

If you could waive a magic wand and erase or reverse anything that happened during this offseason, what would it be and why?

This one's easy. I'd have the Lakers and Spurs trade TC's. Look, the Lakers certainly didn't NEED a good TC, and nor did they get one! But the Spurs have basically sucked off the TC gods for so long that the T2 gif we historically have used to represent TC just does not apply anymore. Not in San Antonio, one of the hottest homes for basketball in the sim country. It's maddening. You have a team that barely lost the championship, and that team gets multiple boosts? Like, no falls?

I can't. Neither can this guy.

S68 Town Hall #1: Reverse, reverse

My own team: I’d take back signing Karlo. This team still ain’t ready. I know some people are saying I need that scorer, but I think even if I added them, my other players still wouldn’t be there yet. This team will be better than last season, but having stayed under the cap for another year probably would be a smart move for me.

For me:

I'd reverse my approach to FA. I had a choice between trying to make big splashes or going all-in on picking up my usual types of players, and I chose the former and struck out big. That's put me into pure tank mode this season and has put more pressure on me to rebuild quickly.

For another GM:

I'd erase Ago Dosunmu's contract. It's not unmanageable, but that's a nice chunk of change that could've gone to someone else...or several people for that matter. I know BigDaddy wanted to jump in and get cooking right away, but sometimes it's good to dip your toes in first. Dosunmu's only going to become more and more of a liability as time goes on.

Coming in new I didn’t want to just keep the status quo, would’ve been easy and probably had a solid team but I wanted to shake things up a bit.

A major decision I made was to forego and offers to Morelock and chose Cam Whitmore as my go to guy. Not understanding too much yet at that point but I liked what I saw in Whitmore and he was cheaper. (Also I offered a way too long of a contract to him.)

Not necessarily doubting my decision but the way people talked about Morelock made it seem he was way better than I assessed, and then TC came Whitmore got rocked down to a 3/3. (Also could’ve learned more about TC beforehand and learned that people just die all the time.)

So could’ve made better decisions about the team I came in with. Although, more than happy with the Amos signing and still believe I can lead this team to the ship.

I wish I had listened to Mike Lowry and picked up another contract before RFA to get access to the MLE. Then I would have been able to sign a big-name player for the MLE.

Going way back, I wish I had thrown points into Scoot before he went purple. I played it crazy this off-season. Crazy dumb! By purposefully not insuring the 4-year max contract for Parker and Clark. I saved the 32 points to put into Scoot to make him go purple; I wanted a 3rd purple more than I cared about Parker or Clark.

As always the TC gods love the titan! Parker and Clark made it through unscathed, and Scoot went purple on his own—not what I was planning on training him in, but still awesome. My tax bill should be pretty small, so I want to train my guys now. But I'm stuck on who to train in what, now that Scoot is off the table.

Kaminga seems too old, and I only have 2 guaranteed years with him left. Clark is too young to contribute this season; maybe train her as trade bait? Maybe Parker's quickness or passing. I'm probably going to go with Clark's 3 because it feels wrong that Caitlin Clark's 3-point shooting is only a C potential.

I turned down a few contract dumps during UFA that I'd probably accept now. I'd have finished my tax bill sooner, but I just wanted some flexibility heading into the season to make some trades if the right one came along.

I'd have offered a team option to Brandon Ingram and/or Charles Jarrett to make them even more attractive trade bait.

I don't think there's much I'd reverse on my team. Not that I had a great offseason, but there was nothing that happened that I could've really helped. I made some attempts at trades, but nothing landed, and if there wasn't a deal out there I liked, no sense in making one just to make one. There was some bad TC luck, but ultimately, everyone kind of landed where I expected them to land. And free agency, I knew McClung would likely take his supermax before any outside free agents signed...I guess I would've gone after different min guys since the ones I went after were either more sought after than I expected (Bryon Nelson) or held out for later rounds rather than settling for a min.

I certainly would have drafted Henry Widener.
That was absolutely my worst mistake of the off-season.
I don't know if he will ever light the league on fire, but I gambled on 2 y/y prospects with athleticism hoping they could turn in good camps.
So far, no good.
Not the end of the world, but decisions like that can add up.
What cha gonna do

Of all the moves I made during the offseason (in completely revamping and restructuring the team), the one regret I had was possibly not making more of an aggressive push to replace Jordan Poole. Poole’s salary helped to open up the books and move up to select Naji Marshall. So I don’t regret making that trade but the end result was not really finding a solution in the immediate for a new floor general. Harold Carter was a temporary answer until TC killed him but he’s cheap depth on a one year deal.

My team is pretty rich atm between the wings and the power forward position. The 5 is probably the easiest position in the game to fill or upgrade depending on what you need but if you don’t have a point guard to connect all the pieces together, the talent will help you push things across to a certain extent.

I'm not sure there's a need for me to use the time stone on this offseason. Every move I made was necessary for the sake of getting under the cap. There's definitely a soft spot in my heart for Akins and I wish he could have stayed with me until he retired. Unfortunately, I had to get under the tax. I had about as perfect as an offseason as I've ever had in accomplishing everything under the umbrella of things to accomplish. We're leaving time alone over here.

Hi there, first time listener, first time caller.

It’s no secret that I’m new to this and going to be learning on the fly, but I’m more than up to the challenge.

If I could do FA again, I’d try harder to trade Zike before FA and definitely go with a better contract for Ayo. But I’m excited to have Ayo on the team and look forward to him being a leader to the young guys. Having both of their contracts isn’t ideal but you can’t learn if you don’t make mistakes.

Cheers to a great season and always remembers kids, FILL YO POUCH!!

The people have been asking and hopefully you can give us some clarification, how do you pronounce Kofi Blaq’s name?

Also, can you explain your reasoning, as a fellow new GM, of doing a manual TC instead of the recommended?

Probably Angelo Romero. He had a terrible TC. I would have used his $30 mil salary and bid for more blue PGs. PG was a priority during offseason and I missed. I should have offered more money for quality PGs. Will see how the season goes. Maybe I can trade Romero down the road.

I would erase the Jazz bid on Joe Freitag. Because I would've EASILY signed him to that deal otherwise. A decent back up big deal too. Still have no idea WHY he would take that offer over mine... but i was just DELETE that bid from the UFA submissions and redo :D
