S51 Open Teams / State of the League

Post by garbageman » Mon Mar 15, 2021 1:53 pm

Hi all,

With S50 wrapping up fast, I'd like to take some time to talk about the future and open teams. The Suns have been declared open since the beginning of S50, and recently, Tani reached out to me to let me know that he's opening up the Kings to new management due to time constraints.

Being that we haven't had takers for the Suns, I don't expect better luck filling a different team, so here are a few points I have in mind.

1. We'll probably need some stewards next season. I still contend that stewards should not be making long term plans for any teams and shouldn't be a second shot for GMs to try to win an unofficial championship, but if we have to have them, I'm open to letting stewards run things how they want with some commissioner veto power.

2. I'm down to eventually contract the league to 24 teams if we don't get any new (or returning) GMs to take over the Suns. However, if GMs are still dropping after that, I think we'll seriously need to gauge interest in keeping this league going.

3. For the good of the league, I think we seriously need to revisit tax forgiveness for Louie. If we're struggling to fill spots as it is, we should really discuss how to uncuff GMs who would be more active if not for tax.

4. If anyone has ANY leads on potential GMs, please hit them up and hit me up.

5. If anyone has any interest in running this league after me, let me know. I'm not out of gas yet, but I've been commissioner for almost 2 years now, and I'd like to gauge whether anyone else wants to do this or whether this league can only last as long as I'm willing to run it.

Hey, just an idea if you choose, if you let me steward a team for a season I can use that team to kind of use it as a testing ground for my buddy Nate. Get his input in decisions and walk him through some of it. Then maybe he could see it all in action and convince him to jump in full time. Like a trial membership for a streaming service.

I love the idea of stewarded teams being used to mentor prospective (but apprehensively non-commital) GMs.

The Suns are my favorite team, just an FYI.

Post-call notes (other feedback appreciated):

1. Seems like there are a few potential interested parties in taking over one of the two open teams. However, if either team isn't claimed on the forums by end of business week, we will need a volunteer steward or two, so by all means, keep looking for referrals. No team is claimed until it's claimed (and granted) on the forum.

2. Priority for stewardship: if you have an understudy who is interested in stewarding with you as an intro to being a new GM, you get first crack. Mamba mentioned he had someone for this situation, AB/K100 have someone who might be interested in joining outright, but could be interested in a slower, more guided path to GMship. Carlos was interested in stewarding and potentially had someone who could understudy as well if that moved him up in stewardship priority. If we go this route, I think the steward would get some point compensation if their understudy took over the team after a season and if the understudy DID take the team over, it would count as part of their referral points.

3. Ideas for year-long tests:
* 3 team trades (unless an incoming salary keeps the team under hard cap, incoming salary for a team must be no more than 125% of outgoing salary)
* Raise max points in trades (15 pts?)
* Another thing we can try to remove is the 5 player/pick max per side per trade. I'm not especially wild about this, but there's not much of a reason for the limit to exist if the game lets us do it.
* One unpopular thing I would like to try is to remove the one-sim exception for vet min FAs in trades. If it can get some support, I'd like to try it sometime.

4. Media Point Coordination
* Are Doug/Chad still interested?
* If not, I'd be ok with word count based honor system and individual meme counting with veto power if the meme/article was non-PBSL. Would want to limit crappy memes though (like, if someone needed 15 points bad, I don't think they should just be able to just dump 45 half-assed memes). There might have to be a limit on points claimable per sim or something.

Alright, not much discussion on this, so here's what's up for S51.

PHOENIX SUNS

The Phoenix Suns will be stewarded by @MexicanMamba who will be shadowed by potential GM recruit @Black Superman. Please include me in all PMs about Suns-based transactions.

Mamba will receive 5 points for stewarding the Suns if Superman doesn't stay on. If Superman does stay on, he will get the referral bonus instead.

TRADING RULES

We're going to try removing the 5 player/pick limit and see if that's not obnoxious.

We're also going to allow 3 team trades this season (starting post-moratorium) if they work in TV and aren't a pain in the ass. I'm sure I'll discover some rules in the process that the software has built in. Other than that, the same rules apply as in 3 team trades. If a team's over the cap, they cannot take in more than 125% of outgoing salary. No team may send more than 10 points. If something looks fishy commissioner can veto and other teams can petition for commissioner to veto.

MEDIA POINTS

@Darth Vegito is back as media czar.
