2005-06 Hall of Fame Nominations

Post by JNR » Thu Jan 14, 2016 8:57 am

NEW RULE: YOU WILL RECEIVE 1 POINT FOR NOMINATING SOMEONE FOR THE HALL OF FAME. IF THE PLAYER YOU NOMINATE GETS VOTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME, YOU GET ANOTHER POINT.

Welcome to the call for nominees to the People’s Basketball Sim League Hall of Fame. The rules are simple. Nominate a player you think deserves to be mentioned among the greatest players to play in this league. Championships, all-star appearances, funny picture blogs: all of these things could mean enough to warrant a nomination. Each GM is allowed one nomination. There’s only one requirement: the player has to be retired from the PBSL. There is no time restriction on retirement – as soon as a player retires, they are eligible for the HOF.

So what’s to stop you from just sending Slava Medvedenko to the Hall of Fame because you like his name? Well, first of all, he’s not retired yet, so you’re clearly not paying attention. But what else is going to stop you? I am.

I will review the nominations and put out a ballot of those we think qualify to be elected to the Hall. And then you vote on those players to see if they get enshrined.

-Nominees on the ballot with over 75% yes votes get into the HOF
-Nominees on the ballot with over 50% yes votes (but under 75%) are automatically considered for next year's ballot ("free" nomination that doesn't cost any owner a yearly nomination).

Nominations open now and will stay open until the end of the regular season. The ballot will be released after the first round of the playoffs. Reply to this post with your nomination.

From 1992 to 1998, there was no doubt who was the most feared double threat wing in the PBSL. Stacey Augmon made 7 straight all star appearances, 7 straight all league team appearances, and two all-defensive teams. He served as the perfect complement to Patrick Ewing in Indiana, as the alpha dog in Sacramento, and as an important bench scorer in Minnesota. He has worn several hats in the PBSL, and he's worn them with style. The two things you'll see in this analysis: Augmon is one of the most winning, most resilient players in the league.

Complement

He came to Indiana and was immediately an impact player. Patrick Ewing was the star, but Augmon was already the leading scorer by the second season. With Augmon and Ewing providing an impressive 1-2 punch, Indiana averaged 52 wins a game and won two division titles. Augmon averaged 25 points a game in this era. The biggest issue here was playoff success: Indiana never won a first round series during Augmon's tenure there. Whether that's Augmon's fault or not, it's unclear, but this was a major black mark on his dominance at the time. Eventually, Pauly moved on from Augmon, and he ended up in Sacramento. From there, the already talented 29 year old really began to blossom.

Alpha

In Sacramento, Augmon's scoring continued. The first two seasons, he averaged 30ppg and 25.6ppg respectively. More importantly, winning followed Augmon to Sacramento. The three seasons he was there, the Kings won 61, 59, and 66 games. Augmon also finally got the playoff monkey off of his back, winning a playoff series: a few of them, actually, making the WCF in the 1999 playoffs. During this period, Augmon missed his first nine games of his PBSL career -- NINE SEASONS IN. He never got injured again. He averaged 25 points in this stretch as well.

Role Player

Something that may hurt his chances is the end of his career, where he went to several bad teams and did not contribute as much as he did in his prime. However, he still averaged around 13-15 ppg in his final few seasons. And get this: in his last four seasons, not one team had a winning record. In fact, one team only won 16 games. With those four seasons, Augmon's teams still won an average of 47 games a year. If you remove the teams where he was a role player, Augmon's teams averaged 55 wins per season.

Augmon never won a ring. He never won an MVP. He was never the arguable best player of the league, although he was Top 5 for a good stretch. These things may hurt his candidacy. But when you look at his overall career: how much he scored, how much his teams won in the regular season, and how well he played defense, it's hard not to see his value.

Stacey Augmon for HOF.

as GM of the Boston Celtics I'd like to nominate Tim Hardaway

Image

Tim has had an outstanding 14 year career highlighted by his dominating years in Philly and championship runs in Boston. He was drafted #16 in the creation draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He spent 4 years there highlighted by the 1992 and 1993 seasons were he averaged 18.1ppg/10.6apg and 20.0ppg/10.6apg respectively. That 20/10 season is especially notable, because only 1 other player in SLOE history has hit that mark for a season and that is Hall of Famer Kevin Johnson.

He had a great run in Boston which resulted in 3 finals appearances and 1 championship. He went on to have two more productive seasons with the Nets and Trailblazers before he started to decline. In his first 11 seasons while he was productive he played a full 82 game season 9 times. Here's a look at his full statistical breakdown season by season

Image

He was a four time All-Star and on the All-NBA 2nd team in 93 and the All-NBA 3rd team in 94. During those Boston years his stats may have gone down some. It's clear he sacrificed personal numbers that absolutely translated into team wins. He won at least 60 games in all 4 seasons in Boston (65, 67, 67, & 61). There have only been two other stretches in SLOE history were a team has won 60+ games 4 seasons in a row Kemps 94-97 Warriors and Wig's Super Team Hawks in 00-03

So in short Hardaway's case comes down to 4 things, which I think are pretty significant.

1. Being one of two players to ever average 20 points and 10 assists in a single season.

2. In his first 11 seasons playing a full 82 games in 9 of them.

3. The second best player on a team who won 60+ games for 4 seasons in a row (only two other teams have had stretches like this)

4. Went to the finals 3 times in 4 years winning a Championship in 1994-1995

One season of Tiny Tim shooting over 43% from the field. Seems like he was coat-tailing Zo to win those rings.

Look at the argument for Hakeem last year. The same stands for D-Rob... AND THEN SOME. This player singlehandedly carried a franchise that had phantom GMs (ssj gohan and not1not2) to the playoffs repeatedly and was a multiple DPOY player.

VOTE FOR DAVID ROBINSON!

Unlikely other GM's will go back and look at Hakeem's argument. But I can testify that The Admiral was one of the most dominant forces this league has ever seen.

BRAD DAUGHERTY

FINAL PLAYER PAGE: http://pbsl.ijbl.net/2002/players/player118.htm

Daugherty was already 25 when the PBSL dispersal draft occurred, which means that like some of the other "old-timers" in the Hall, he was already more or less in his prime by the time the PBSL started. He carried the Grizzlies in his 6 seasons there, scoring and rebounding with incredible efficiency. His scoring only dipped below 20 ppg (to 19.9) in his final season with the Grizzlies and he never shot worse than .526 from the field. His points per shot generally hovered in the ridiculous 1.5 to 1.6 range and he posted PERs in the mid-to-high 20's, occasionally jumping into the 30's.

While he never won a title, he was a consistent all-star for most of the 90's - he mad all-star teams when the likes of Malone and Barkley were at their peak, was still competitive against the likes of Kemp, and even lasted into the Zo/Shaq era. Even at age 35, in 2000-2001, he was still starting and logging over 30 minutes per game, and doing it for a playoff team in San Antonio.

Playing in an era of OP's, Daugherty was consistent, sustained excellence and is a deserving Hall of Famer.

I'd like to nominate who should have been in the Hall of Fame a few seasons ago: one of the 2-3 best point guards to ever play in this league: John Stockton.

Accomplishments:
Player of the Game: 125
Player of the Week: 2
All-Star Appearances: 4
All-League First Team: 1
All-League Second Team: 1
All-Defensive Second Team: 3
Assists Leader: 3
Steals Leader: 2

Stockton came into this league as the 14th pick in the creation draft. He came in already 29, but was an elite facilitator. He lived up to the hype and then some. He led the NBA in assists in his first 3 seasons and led the league in steals the first 2. He was a productive player for his first 8 seasons in the league, but I'd like to focus on his first 4 seasons, particularly his first 2 before he turned 31. During his 3rd and 4th seasons he was still a top flight Point Guard, scoring 15 and 14 points and averaging 11 and 10 assists. He also was still a hound on defense, averaging 2 steals a game. Those numbers in year 3 and 4 would be easily the best in assists and were very good scoring and defense wise. But his first 2 seasons were absurd. If one looks for the most assists in a season, Stockton holds the record and the number 2 spot. In his first 2 seasons he averaged 14.4 and 14.6 assists per game. Think about that: if he were in the league this year, he would've been the assists champion by over 5 assists. While doing this, he had an assist/turnover ratio of 5.29 and 5.92! In the meantime, he averaged 18/19 points per game and led the league with 2.5 steals per game. He posted ridiculous PER's of 30.2 and 28.8. He led the Mavericks to a Western Conference Championship over #1 pick Michael Jordan and the Utah Jazz. He's the greatest handler and passer in the history of sim league and along with his other noteworthy accomplishments, Stockton deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

David Robinson. Before to dive deep, let's just look at his accomplishments:

Total Player of the Game: 414
Total Player of the Week: 57
Total Player of the Month: 26
Total All-Star Appearances: 8
Total All-League First Team: 4
Total All-League Second Team: 3
Total All-Defensive First Team: 3
Total All-Defensive Second Team: 1
Total Defensive Player of the Year: 2
Total Most Valuable Player: 1
Total Scoring Leader: 2
Total Blocks Leader: 2

The 1st 2 seasons in the league, David Robinson averaged a PER of 42.9. For the next 5 seasons, he posted a PER of 30 or better. He singlehandedly carried the Knicks to 5 playoff appearances in 7 seasons, despite a prominent presence at the GM and coaching levels. He was a quite possibly the most dangerous center in the league for years, and haunted the dreams of GMs who played against him in the playoffs. How many players in league history can you name that averaged 30+ ppg, 11+ rpg, 3+ bpg FOUR YEARS IN A ROW? A 7-time All-League player, 8-time All-Star, and 1-time MVP. The only thing missing from his resume is a championship. But that should not be something that disqualifies him from HOF contention. David Robinson deserves your vote. David Robison will get your vote.

He belongs in the HOF, and he will be enshrined among the greatest of all time.
